Portoferraio is the most densely populated city on the Elba Island. It is located in the northern part of the island and it is where most of the sandy beaches can be found (two of the most famous are Punta Pina and Biondola).
Napoleon himself chose Portoferraio to be the administrative centre in Elba and its cities of residence; it is still possible to visit his houses in San Martino and Villa dei Mulini.
At first sight, coming from the sea, Portoferraio almost looks like a cove protected and reinforced by the strongholds against the raids of pirates; that is because the city was originally built as a series of fortifications that are still partially standing and that together with the walls surrounding the old town are very interesting to visit. Worthy of a special visit is the dock that used to pertain to the Medici family and that in the 16th century worked as a protection against pirates.
Those interested in knowing something about the cultural side of Portoferraio, other than the numerous religious architectural sites, can visit the the Archaelogical museum and dive into the past of the island. Moreover, in there area there are the remains of two Roman villas (Villa delle Grotte and Villa della Linguella) showing the area was already well known during the Imperial era.
